200INVERNESS & ABERDEEN JUNCTION RAILWAY issued FIRST CLASS FREE TICKET issued to Mr Robert D Kay and dated to expire on 18th August 1863 on thin card with train times noted on the back in pencil. Interestingly, the clerk issuing the ticket has neatly crossed out “Aberdeen” and replaced it with “Perth” in manuscript. It would appear that although separate companies, the I&AJR worked closely with the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway as it was a ticket issued printed by the former. The I&PJR did not open until 1st June 1863 and it seems this ticket was used rather than wait for a new print with the new company heading. Both companies amalgamated on 29th June 1865 to form the Highland Railway. Minor rust mark at top of ticket, good/VGC otherwise. (1)£340Lot 200

250YORK & NORTH MIDLAND RAILWAY issued 3rd class Day Ticket single from Leamside to Durham (dated for the 3rd Train running on May 25th (no year)). The ticket carries the monogram “Y&NM” in security printing on the back. It is printed on slightly shiny card typical of that used by de la Rue who printed the back of the ticket before Thomas Edmondson printed the front. Use of the “Y&NM” monogram is, however, incorrect as the station was opened by the Newcastle & Darlington Railway on 19th June 1844 which was renamed York & Newcastle Railway on 3rd August 1846. The company was amalgamated with the Newcastle & Berwick Railway on 9th August 1847 to form the York Newcastle & Berwick Railway. In turn, the YN&BR amalgamated with the York & North Midland Railway and others to form the North Eastern Railway on 31st July 1854. It is probable that Edmondson used up some old stock in hand to avoid wastage. The ticket is said to have come from the estate of Mr John Marley who was the Surveyor of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and President of the North of England Institute of Mining Engineers, also the person who discovered Cleveland Ironstone which instigated the industrial growth of Middlesbrough.  The ticket is in VGC despite a very slight (/) and is extremely rare.
